We will define SEL and explore the SEL competencies including the State of Ohio K-12 Social Emotional Learning Standards. We will briefly look at the research about why SEL is important. We will then dive into various implementation strategies that reflect these competencies, beginning with;
1) check-ins and check-outs,
2) empathy building practices,
3) emotional regulation techniques, and
4) gratitude exercises.
These implementation strategies will help educators learn techniques in how to lead by example, how to display healthy behavior examples for students to learn from and learn how to practice these skills for themselves.
We will discuss expectations of students that are age and trauma appropriate and then move into a discussion of program/exercise effectiveness, measurement, and evaluation of SEL growth and development. We will briefly touch on SEL in adults and SEL remediation when neccessary as it is NECESSARY for adults to serve as examples for students to learn from.
Presenters: Bethany Friedlander, President & CEO of NewBridge, has a demonstrated record of developing and managing high performing teams. She has experience with program development, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and is a Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher and expert in the practice of Mindfulness.
Bethany has a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from Case Western Reserve University and a secondary teaching certificate in history from Cleveland State University.
Bethany Monteiro, Former Peace Corps Volunteer and current Director of SEL at NewBridge, is responsible for developing arts-inspired SEL curriculum, facilitating and evaluating youth programming and student leadership projects, serving as a community liaison for SEL development, and providing SEL professional development/training to NewBridge’s staff as well as professionals from various outside organizations.
Bethany majored in Neuroscience and minored in Art History with her B.A. from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.
