LC: How can the United Way and others in the funding community advance literacy through their grantmaking?
MB: Literacy needs to become a community wide priority of everyday people. When the general population begins to understand that the only way out of poverty is being literate, completing your education, and securing employment, they will support and advocate for efforts to advance literacy. LC: What new ways of thinking are needed to address the poverty and low education attainment found in Cleveland?
MB: The tried and true shouldn't necessarily be cast aside, but instead of working in silos, we need to work more in groups. We don't have the resources to support individual efforts. Since these are quality of life issues, a more collaborative agenda where different sectors work together is needed.
