About the Conference

The Literacy Cooperative presented a day long conference on June 8, 2007, to discuss and explore strategies to connect educational and training programs and support services that prepares and enables individuals to secure a job and advance over time to successively higher levels of education and employment.

Three themes guided the focus for the conference:

• Foster collaborations between businesses, community organizations, educators, nonprofit organizations, and workforce development agencies to open doors to better careers and employment opportunities to improve standards of living in the region.
• Convene community stakeholder groups to discuss new paradigms to increase literacy rates and regional economic development through education and training.
• Raise awareness among businesses, educators and community-based organizations about available employment training resources and literacy services to increase employee performance.
