(Continued)

Equipping children and programs are important conditions for success and The Literacy Cooperative is excited to be working in both domains through its SPARK program and NEO Literacy Corps initiative. In the updates on SPARK and NEO Literacy Corps, you will learn about the partner schools and organizations, goals for the coming year, and recruitment efforts of participants and AmeriCorps Member staff.

We also take a look at two non-literacy organizations who recently added adult education classes to their available services. They offer an interesting model, where supporting the community with varied and integrated programs drives their missions.

City Council President, Martin Sweeney, offers his thoughts on how to advocate for literacy and  if Community Development Corporations could have a role in developing the literacy skills of their residents.

Lastly, make sure to mark your calendars and plan on attending the Right to Literacy Rally being held on August 9th at the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library. Attendees will have an opportunity to sign the Right to Literacy Declaration, which has been traveling around the country. The declaration has been signed by thousands of people, including the Mayors of Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, New York City, Buffalo, Baton Rouge, and San Antonio. It will be making a final stop at the White House in September to be presented to President Obama.

As always, we appreciate hearing from you. Feel free to drop us a line and tell us about your work in the community.
